Showcasing the kind of celebrations that occur within the Chinese Spring Festival for the benefit of culture-enthusiasts in Nepal, the Confucius Institute at the Kathmandu University School of Arts in Hattiban held a special programme on January 26.
The 2013 Spring Festival Celebration featured a number of cultural dances, songs, poem recitations and other miscellaneous traditional presentations, performed by a mix of Nepali students from various schools along with Chinese children. High-ranking officials and intellectuals from both the countries were present on the occasion, including Chinese ambassador to Nepal HE Yang Houlan, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute Zhang Shubin, Chief Secretary Lila Mani Paudel, KU Registrar Bhadra Man Tuladhar and Harish Chandra Shah, the president of the Nepal-China Cultural and Educational Council.
Ambassador Houlan spoke of the programme as a mark of the ever strengthening Nepal-China bond. “Following the visit of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to Nepal last year, relations between the two countries have become more intimate, and cultural exchange programmes such as this will only help in ushering those relations forward.”
Students from various schools and colleges such Little Angels’ School, Venus Public School, King’s College and Sublime Higher Secondary Boarding School were part of the presentations, including students from the Confucius Institute.
Starting on the Chinese New Year, and lasting for a half month, the Spring Festival comes around every year, and is one of the most important traditional holidays in the country, involving a great deal of merrymaking and festivities.
